WINERIES IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY |
There are numerous wineries in la Rioja Alavesa (an area that occupies most of the left side of the river Ebro between Haro and Lanciego) which offer guided tours with meals for groups, usually pre-booked. The wines from Alava are among the better known in Spain, and even internationally, for their red wines, for their “young” wine of the year and the aged wines. The traditional menu in the wineries is of boiled potatoes with “chorizo” (Spanish sausage) and lamb chops grilled on a fire with the wood from the grape vines. . |

CIDER HOUSES IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY |

The cider houses are normally “caserios” (traditional Basque houses) mostly situated in Gipuzkoa, which have facilities for the making and bottling of cider and a space where they keep the “kupelas” (barrels) and a few long tables on which they serve their specialities (codfish omelette, fried cod with green peppers and grilled T-bones). The season begins in January and finishes around mid-April. During these months it has become a tradition for the Basque people to go to these cider houses to take part in the “txotx” ritual, which is as nice as it is curious: the owner of the cider house chooses a barrel and as he shouts “txotx” he invites all those present to try out his cider. You may drink as much cider as wish. . |
